Aloe Vera will most probably not cure your acne as it does not address the causes of the problem it is very useful in reducing the inflammation, redness and swelling. It is also an astringent which helps to close the pores making it less likely for environmental nasties getting into your skin.
What has been found in various studies is that Aloe Vera is very effective in healing acne scars over time if applied on a regular, daily basis.
So What Is Aloe Vera?
Aloe Vera is a succulent plant species originating from Northern Africa and Madagascar. The plant stores water in its roots, stems and leaves giving it a fleshy appearance.
If you happen to have an Aloe Vera plant in the garden and you break off a piece of a leaf, you’ll find a clear substance which oozes out and this is referred to as the Aloe Vera gel.
The Aloe Vera gel has been used for thousands of years starting with the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians to treat cuts, wounds and inflammation.
Along with its astringent properties, aloe vera is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. It also helps to stimulate cell growth which is why it is very useful in healing or reducing acne scars. This magical plant also contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and proteins which are not only necessary for our skin’s natural healing ability but also for boosting our immune system.
Aloe Vera contains a compound called Anthraquinone which helps to promote skin cell regeneration. This compound stimulates the skin’s natural cell development which means that your skin cells will regenerate much quicker than if Aloe Vera gel was not applied. The gel also helps to lighten skin pigmentation which can reduce the appearance of blemishes and scars.
Another compound found in Aloe Vera gel is called aloesin which stimulates the production of collagen which helps to keep our skin looking fresh and supple. This will definitely boost your skin’s radiance and make it look healthy. The extra collagen also helps to fill in scars and wrinkles.
A good basic regime is to apply Aloe Vera gel twice a day until the scars are completely healed. The length of time that it takes to heal your acne scars will depend on how old the scars are. You’ll could find a reduction in the newer scars in as little as 2 – 3 weeks.
You can either use the gel from a living plant, if you have access to one or you can purchase a commercially prepared gel from a health food store. Make sure it’s as natural as possible.
Once applied to the skin you will notice a tightening. This is perfectly normal due to the plant’s astringent properties. Some people can have an allergic reaction to the gel, as is possible with a lot of other natural products, so just test it first, maybe on the inside of your wrist, to eliminate any possibility of irritation or redness.
Aloe Vera has also been known to cause sun sensitivity in some people so you may need to avoid going out in the sun after you’ve applied the gel or wear a hat if you find that you are susceptible to this problem.
