While having a great skin care range is vital to your skin’s health, its also vitally important that you have the correct skin care routine both morning and night so that you use your products effectively rather than have them sit in your bathroom cabinet.

success_stories_opt

What should your basic morning skin care routine be?

  • Start with the facial cleanser working a small amount into a lather in your hands and gently massaging into wet face.  Always avoid contact with the eye area as this is a very sensitive area and is prone to irritation and stretching of the skin.   Rinse off your cleanser with warm water.  Never use hot water on your face as this can create broken capillaries.  Pat skin dry.
  • Gently spread a small amount of clearing tonic onto your face avoiding the eye area.  You may use your hands or a cotton ball or pad if you prefer.
  • Apply the acne treatment serum to your face while it is still damp from the clearing tonic.  Once again avoid the eye area.  Let the serum dry for 3-5 minutes before applying other products.  Use only a small amount of serum to begin with to see how your particular skin type reacts to it.  If your skin becomes too dry or red, reduce the amount of serum you apply or only apply every second day.  If you have very oily skin you can build up the amount you use over a 2-3 week period.
  • Depending on your skin type, apply the optimum amount of moisture complex – more if your skin tends to dry out but less if you have very oily skin.

What should your basic night time skin care routine be?

  • Facial cleanser – same as morning routine
  • Clearing tonic – same as morning routine
  • Gently apply a small amount of clear pore serum onto your face while it is still damp from the clearing tonic.  Avoid the eye area and let the serum dry for 3-5 minutes before applying other products.
  • Apply a small amount of moisture complex once the skin is dry to keep it hydrated while you sleep.

Always remember when you start using a new skin care range that your skin may get worse before it improves.  This actually shows that the products are working as all the impurities in your skin are being brought to the surface to be gently removed over a couple of weeks.  At any rate you should see some noticeable improvements to your skin after about 5-6 weeks so keep using the products even if at first your skin looks worse or you can’t see any positive change.

In addition to the above routines you can use the clarifying mask or microderm scrub about once a week but never at the same time or on the same day as this is too much over stimulation for your skin.  Ideally you would use the scrub one week and the mask the following week and keep alternating in this way.

Are there any side effects?

As mentioned previously, your skin could possibly suffer some initial flare ups when you first start using the products and you may experience some tingling.  This is perfectly normal and will settle down after a few days and can be an indication that the products are working.

In saying that however, everyone’s skin is different, so if you do experience extreme discomfort please consult with your local doctor or skin care specialist before continuing to use the products.  Fortunately these products come with a 1-year guarantee so you can feel assured that you will not be out of pocket if for some reason your skin reacts badly to these products.

How does Exposed Skin Care compare to other acne treatment products like Proactive & Murad?

While Proactive contains Benzoyl peroxide, salicyclic acid, glycolic acid  to kill bacteria, unclog pores and speed up cell renewal in your skin, it does not offer some of the other benefits that Exposed Skin Care has such as improving skin tone, reducing excess sebum and calming skin inflammation with the addition of natural essential oils.

Murad, on the other hand contains salicyclic acid (only 1.5%), glycolic acid, sulfur and tea tree oil to unclog pores, reduce excess sebum, kill bacteria, speed up cell renewal and reduce inflammation, however without the benefits of benzoyl peroxide and the natural essential oils it does not have the same treatment power as the Exposed Skin Care range and is really only suitable for mild acne outbreaks.

So in conclusion, unless you have extremely sensitive skin, I would definitely recommend you give Exposed Skin Care a try for the most effective and all round acne treatment.

Evening Primrose Oil: Can Be Helpful for Hormonal Acne

Evening Primrose Oil has been found to be very effective in treating hormonal acne.  Due to its ability to correct hormonal imbalance and provide nutrients which are essential for cell structure, this natural oil can not only assist in actually curing hormonal acne when taken internally but can also help with healing acne scars when applied topically.

14783984960_064d7ae865_mWhat is Evening Primrose Oil?

Evening primrose oil is derived from the seed of the evening primrose plant.  It contains a high concentration of Omega-6 fatty acids commonly know as gamma-linoleic acid or GLA.  These acids are converted into prostaglandins in the body which are necessary hormones for reducing inflammation and hormone regulation.  Omega-6 fatty acids cannot be produced by the body and can only be obtained from plant oils.

Vitamins essential for healthy skin such as vitamin E and vitamin C are also contained in evening primrose oil. This oil is also anti-inflammatory so it will calm and reduce the redness and inflammation of both acne breakouts and rosacea.

How Does Evening Primrose Oil Work?

Besides the benefits of hormonal balancing, evening primrose oil is also known to dilute sebum (the oil your body produces in over abundance when you experience acne breakouts) which reduces the risk of pores becoming clogged.

How Do You Use Evening Primrose Oil?235948411_5bdb7cbe79_m

The oil is available either in capsule form or as an oil.  As the oil itself has a short shelf life and needs to be refrigerated to stop it becoming rancid the capsulated form is a much better alternative.

The most commonly recommended dosage is 3000mg per day, so 1 capsule 3 times per day taken internally.  You can also pierce a capsule and apply the oil topically straight onto any acne spots and scars which will help with healing.
It is recommended that this topical application is done at the end of every other day for a couple of weeks and then every day after that.  It is best to apply at night time as the cells in the body rejuvenate during sleep.

What Are The Safety Precautions Or Side Effects To Consider When Using Evening Primrose Oil?

Although evening primrose oil is relatively safe for most people there are a few safety precautions which need to be considered.

Avoid using if:

  • You have a bleeding disorder as it may increase the chance of bruising and bleeding due to the GLA which can slow blood clotting.
  • You have low blood pressure as evening primrose oil can lower blood pressure.
  • You are pregnant as it may increase the chance of having complications and it can also cause the uterus to contract.
  • You suffer from epilepsy as it may make seizures more likely to occur in some people.
  • You suffer from Schizophrenia as the fatty acids in evening primrose oil may cause seizures when combined with medication.
  • You are having surgery as the oil can increase the chance of bleeding during or after surgery.

There are many positive reviews available from people who have successfully used evening primrose oil to treat their acne so it is definitely worth a try if you are looking to treat your acne naturally.

Other Benefits Of Using Evening Primrose Oil

  • Nourish hair, nails and scalp – due to the concentration of fatty acids evening primrose oil can be very beneficial in treating dry scalp issues and can prevent nails from cracking.
  • Treat eczema – eczema is quite often the result of the body’s inability to convert dietary fats into GLA therefore taking GLA in a supplement can help to reverse this annoying and painful skin condition.
  • Can ease the symptoms of menopause and premenstrual syndrome – although there is not much scientific evidence of this, many women have reported lessening of symptoms when using evening primrose oil.
  • Improve the symptoms of nerve damage in diabetes sufferers – a number of clinical trials have reported that with sufferers taking evening primrose oil for 6 to 12 months there is a marked improvement in nerve damage caused by diabetes.
  • Can lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Bio Oil: Can It Be Useful In Treating Acne Scars?

After reading many reviews of the use of Bio Oil in treating acne scars there seem to be enough positive responses to consider using this product to treat acne scars.  Bio Oil may not totally erase acne scars and certainly not in a short period of time but with prolonged and consistent use it can fade the scars significantly and also has the added benefit of evening out the skin tone and keeping the skin moisturized, soft and supple.

Firstly, What Is Bio Oil?

Bio Oil is a formulated product containing various plant oils as well as Vitamin A & E and a product called Purcellin Oil.  It also contains fragrance (rose) and color.574546556_038e3ee3e6_q

Purcellin Oil is a laboratory manufactured oil to resemble the preen gland oil of ducks.  While preening ducks will secrete an oil from their preen glands and then distribute this over their entire body.  As a result, this oil creates a non-greasy, thin layer over the surface of the duck’s feathers which basically repels water.

It is this particular ingredient that allows Bio Oil to be easily absorbed into the skin and therefore will not encourage your skin to produce excessive sebum. Many people believe that oily skin is bad and so they use products to dry their skin out.  This actually has the opposite effect as your skin’s natural response is to then produce more oil which is needed to keep it hydrated.

A lot of people who have used Bio Oil regularly have reported that their skin feels incredibly soft and hydrated without excessive oiliness.

What Plant Oils Does Bio Oil Contain?

Bio Oil contains Calendula Oil, Lavender Oil, Rosemary Oil and Chamomile Oil.  Lets look at these oils individually to see what their benefits are:

Calendula Oil comes from a pretty flowering plant, marigold (Calendula Officinalis). This lovely oil can stimulate the production of collagen around wounds and minimize scarring.  The oil is distilled from the flower petals.   Calendula oil has excellent anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and is often used in different skin care preparations for its soothing and softening abilities.

Calendula contains high levels of carotenoids which are Vitamin A like compounds and help speed up the healing process.  Calendula oil is also useful for treating other skin ailments like sunburn, bed sores, diaper rash and dermatitis.

Lavender Oil is derived from the lavender plant (Lavandula angustifolia) and is actually a herb. Lavender oil has both anti-septic and anti-fungal properties and these naturally can help reduce scarring and promote faster healing.  Lavender oil is also known to tone and firm the skin as it helps to boost circulation which in turn increases the supply of oxygen and nutrition to the skin cells.  This in itself can help the skin cells to regenerate faster which of course means increased healing of scar tissue.

The healing benefits of lavender oil were first discovered in 1910 by French chemist Renee-Maurice Gattefosse who suffered severe burns to his hands in an explosion in his laboratory.  After extinguishing the burns by rolling on a grassy lawn both hands were covered with a rapidly developing gangrene.  He rinsed his hands with lavender oil which stopped the gasification of the skin and healed the burns very quickly and with minimal scarring.  As you can guess from this story, lavender oil is very beneficial in treating minor burns as well.

Other benefits of lavender oil include temporary headache relief, improving sleep, helps ease upper respiratory complaints, relief of menstrual symptoms, eases symptoms associated with nausea, colic and flatulence, warms painful joints plus can be a handy insect repellent and can ease the pain associated with insect bites and stings.

Rosemary Oil is derived from the herb Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinallis) and is commonly used in cooking.  Rosemary oil has anti-microbial and antiseptic qualities which help with skin healing.  This oil can also help tone the skin and remove dryness.  As with Lavender oil, Rosemary oil has the ability to accelerate cell regeneration making it very useful in the treatment of scars.

Rosemary oil can also help to lighten dark spots on the skin and has properties which helps the skin to retain its softness and suppleness.  This useful oil has also been shown to balance androgen and estrogen in the body so can be very useful for anyone suffering from hormonal acne.

Other benefits of Rosemary oil include helping to relieve muscular tension including headaches, temporary relief for arthritic and rheumatic pain, helps fight mild upper respiratory complaints, can relieve symptoms associated with digestive upsets, and can be very useful for memory retention so can help concentration levels during long study periods.

Traditionally knows as the calming oil, Chamomile Oil is extracted from the flowers of Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis).  Chamomile is well known for it calming properties and is quite effective in reducing redness and irritation, often in a matter of seconds.  Its anti-inflammatory properties make this possible.  Because chamomile oil is anti-allergenic it can be very effective in treating acne by removing toxins and cleaning sebaceous glands.

Other benefits of using Chamomile oil include helping to ease stress and tension, temporary relief of headaches and sleeplessness, ideal for gastrointestinal discomfort, can ease muscular pain, eases stiffness and swelling in joints and is very soothing for minor burns, wounds and other skin disorders such as dermatitis, psoriasis and cold sores.

What Does Vitamin A & E Do For Your Skin?

Now lets look at the benefits of vitamin A & E:

Vitamin A (Retinyl palmitate) thickens and stimulates the dermis which is the skin layer containing collagen, elastin and blood vessels.  It also has the ability to repair the cell structure of the epidermis (outer layer) which is why it is useful in healing scar tissue.  Vitamin A also has the ability to decrease the clustering of melanin granules which can reduce brown spots and pigmentation.  Another benefit of Vitamin A is that it decreases sebum production thus reducing excessive oiliness.

Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) is an antioxidant which can protect and repair your skin.  Antioxidants are well known to neutralize free radicals which are free flowing molecules produced by your body after being exposed to damaging environmental factors such as ultraviolet rays that can damage collagen and create skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E can also be helpful in the repair of damaged skin cells as it stimulates the production of connective tissue growth.  This again can be useful in healing acne scars.

In conclusion, after looking at all the benefits of the individual ingredients contained in Bio Oil, it would suggest that this product can indeed be useful in treating acne scars.

Aloe Vera – Can It Heal Your Acne Scars?

Aloe Vera will most probably not cure your acne as it does not address the causes of the problem it is very useful in reducing the inflammation, redness and swelling.  It is also an astringent which helps to close the pores making it less likely for environmental nasties getting into your skin.

What has been found in various studies is that Aloe Vera is very effective in healing acne scars over time if applied on a regular, daily basis.

So What Is Aloe Vera?

Aloe Vera is a succulent plant species originating from Northern Africa and Madagascar.  The plant stores water in its roots, stems and leaves giving it a fleshy appearance.

If you happen to have an Aloe Vera plant in the garden and you break off a piece of a leaf, you’ll find a clear substance which oozes out and this is referred to as the Aloe Vera gel.

The Aloe Vera gel has been used for thousands of years starting with the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians to treat cuts, wounds and inflammation.

Along with its astringent properties, aloe vera is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.  It also helps to stimulate cell growth which is why it is very useful in healing or reducing acne scars.  This magical plant also contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and proteins which are not only necessary for our skin’s natural healing ability but also for boosting our immune system.

How Does Aloe Vera Help with Healing Acne Scars?Cut Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera contains a compound called Anthraquinone which helps to promote skin cell regeneration.  This compound stimulates the skin’s natural cell development which means that your skin cells will regenerate much quicker than if Aloe Vera gel was not applied.  The gel also helps to lighten skin pigmentation which can reduce the appearance of blemishes and scars.

Another compound found in Aloe Vera gel is called aloesin which stimulates the production of collagen which helps to keep our skin looking fresh and supple.  This will definitely boost your skin’s radiance and make it look healthy.  The extra collagen also helps to fill in scars and wrinkles.

7648381366_8ab45b3400_mHow Can You Use Aloe Vera Gel To Assist With Your Acne Scar Home Treatment?

A good basic regime is to apply Aloe Vera gel twice a day until the scars are completely healed.  The length of time that it takes to heal your acne scars will depend on how old the scars are.  You’ll could find a reduction in the newer scars in as little as 2 – 3 weeks.

You can either use the gel from a living plant, if you have access to one or you can purchase a commercially prepared gel from a health food store.  Make sure it’s as natural as possible.

Once applied to the skin you will notice a tightening.  This is perfectly normal due to the plant’s astringent properties.  Some people can have an allergic reaction to the gel, as is possible with a lot of other natural products, so just test it first, maybe on the inside of your wrist, to eliminate any possibility of irritation or redness.

Aloe Vera has also been known to cause sun sensitivity in some people so you may need to avoid going out in the sun after you’ve applied the gel or wear a hat if you find that you are susceptible to this problem.

Using Aloe Vera As a Face Mask to Reduce Acne Scars

1. Mix some Aloe Vera gel with a few drops of lemon or lime and blend together.
Apply this paste to your face and leave on over night.
Wash off in the morning.
Keep the paste in the refrigerator for further use.

2. Add a little turmeric, honey, milk and rose water to some Aloe Vera gel.
Mix well and apply to the affected areas on your face.
Leave on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse off thoroughly.

Tea Tree Oil For Acne

Is Tea Tree Oil An Effective Acne Treatment?

While tea tree oil will not cure your acne it can be very effective as a topical treatment to reduce the redness and swelling of pimples as they occur.

It’s anti-bacterial properties are Photo Credit: https://flic.kr/p/7mq4k3also useful in killing the bacteria associated with the development of acne lesions.

It’s very important that you purchase a high quality 100% pure tea tree to ensure the effectiveness of the oil’s properties.

What is Tea Tree Oil?

This natural oil is distilled from the Australian paperbark tree, Melaleuca alternifolia and has anti-infectious, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.  It has been used for centuries by Australian Aborigines to cure infected wounds and is also very useful for reducing the pain and itching associated with insect bites.

Some people with very sensitive skin may find tea tree oil slightly irritating if used undiluted.  In this case it can be diluted with a natural carrier oil like avocado or almond oil or aloe vera gel.  Tea tree oil can also be added to other natural skin care products like cleansers, moisturizers, face masks and gentle scrubs.

5 Ways to Use Tea Tree Oil for Acne as an Effective Treatment

1. Apply directly to pimples
Put a few drops onto a cotton bud and apply directly to the infected spot.  This will penetrate the skin, unblock the sebaceous glands and dry out the blemishes, whiteheads and blackheads.  You should see a reduction in the redness and swelling especially if left on the skin overnight.  Remember to clean and dry your skin before applying the tea tree oil.

2. Create your own homemade spot treatment
You can dilute the pure tea tree oil with aloe vera gel if you find that the 100% pure oil is too harsh for your skin.  Add two to three drops of tea tree oil to a few teaspoons of aloe vera gel and apply directly to the acne lesions.

You can also try adding a few drops of tea tree oil to a small amount of raw, organic honey.  Honey promotes skin healing and also contains antibacterial properties.

3. Make your own face mask
Mix 3-4 drops of tea tree oil with a couple of tablespoons of clay powder which can be purchased at any health food store. Then add enough water to form a paste and spread onto the face.  Leave to dry for about 20 minutes and then rinse off with warm water and pat dry.  Remember to only use warm water as hot water can irritate your skin and cause broken capillaries.  You can use a final splash of cold water as this helps to close the pores.

You could also try mixing about 5 drops of tea tree oil with 1/4 cup of plain yogurt and apply this as a mask as above.

You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil to any natural store bought face mask product that you may have at home.

4. Make your own facial scrub
Combine 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of olive oil or avocado oil, 1 tablespoon of pure organic honey and about 10 drops of tea tree oil.  Massage this mixture onto your damp face in gentle circular motions for a couple of minutes.  Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.  This scrub is only recommended for people with mild to medium breakouts as it can be a little too harsh for people suffering from cystic acne.

5. Add tea tree oil to your regular cleanser and moisturizer.
Before cleansing your face, put a small amount of cleanser in your hand and add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil.  The same can be done before using your regular moisturizer.  Be very careful though to avoid the eye area so that you do not get any of the oil in your eyes.

Will Tea Tree Oil Help To Reduce Acne Scars?

There are no studies to indicate that tea tree oil will help to reduce acne scars but you can assist in the healing of facial scar tissue by adding a few drops of tea tree oil to some jojoba oil and applying this to your skin on a regular basis.

Jojoba oil contains vitamin E and antioxidants which are particular useful for healthy daily skin care.  It also has antibacterial properties and can help to lighten scarring.  The jojoba oil will not only moisture your skin but make it smooth as well.
