Is Tea Tree Oil An Effective Acne Treatment?
While tea tree oil will not cure your acne it can be very effective as a topical treatment to reduce the redness and swelling of pimples as they occur.
It’s very important that you purchase a high quality 100% pure tea tree to ensure the effectiveness of the oil’s properties.
What is Tea Tree Oil?
This natural oil is distilled from the Australian paperbark tree, Melaleuca alternifolia and has anti-infectious, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It has been used for centuries by Australian Aborigines to cure infected wounds and is also very useful for reducing the pain and itching associated with insect bites.
Some people with very sensitive skin may find tea tree oil slightly irritating if used undiluted. In this case it can be diluted with a natural carrier oil like avocado or almond oil or aloe vera gel. Tea tree oil can also be added to other natural skin care products like cleansers, moisturizers, face masks and gentle scrubs.
5 Ways to Use Tea Tree Oil for Acne as an Effective Treatment
1. Apply directly to pimples
Put a few drops onto a cotton bud and apply directly to the infected spot. This will penetrate the skin, unblock the sebaceous glands and dry out the blemishes, whiteheads and blackheads. You should see a reduction in the redness and swelling especially if left on the skin overnight. Remember to clean and dry your skin before applying the tea tree oil.
2. Create your own homemade spot treatment
You can dilute the pure tea tree oil with aloe vera gel if you find that the 100% pure oil is too harsh for your skin. Add two to three drops of tea tree oil to a few teaspoons of aloe vera gel and apply directly to the acne lesions.
You can also try adding a few drops of tea tree oil to a small amount of raw, organic honey. Honey promotes skin healing and also contains antibacterial properties.
3. Make your own face mask
Mix 3-4 drops of tea tree oil with a couple of tablespoons of clay powder which can be purchased at any health food store. Then add enough water to form a paste and spread onto the face. Leave to dry for about 20 minutes and then rinse off with warm water and pat dry. Remember to only use warm water as hot water can irritate your skin and cause broken capillaries. You can use a final splash of cold water as this helps to close the pores.
You could also try mixing about 5 drops of tea tree oil with 1/4 cup of plain yogurt and apply this as a mask as above.
You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil to any natural store bought face mask product that you may have at home.
4. Make your own facial scrub
Combine 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of olive oil or avocado oil, 1 tablespoon of pure organic honey and about 10 drops of tea tree oil. Massage this mixture onto your damp face in gentle circular motions for a couple of minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry. This scrub is only recommended for people with mild to medium breakouts as it can be a little too harsh for people suffering from cystic acne.
5. Add tea tree oil to your regular cleanser and moisturizer.
Before cleansing your face, put a small amount of cleanser in your hand and add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil. The same can be done before using your regular moisturizer. Be very careful though to avoid the eye area so that you do not get any of the oil in your eyes.
Will Tea Tree Oil Help To Reduce Acne Scars?
There are no studies to indicate that tea tree oil will help to reduce acne scars but you can assist in the healing of facial scar tissue by adding a few drops of tea tree oil to some jojoba oil and applying this to your skin on a regular basis.
Jojoba oil contains vitamin E and antioxidants which are particular useful for healthy daily skin care. It also has antibacterial properties and can help to lighten scarring. The jojoba oil will not only moisture your skin but make it smooth as well.
